The problem is that people making decisions about where to deploy AI are thinking about efficiency and cost rather than patient experience and wellbeing. That creates pressure to use AI for more than it should handle, justified by cost savings rather than whether it's actually better for patients.

What should you watch for?

Don't be afraid to ask the question "How can I speak to a real person if I need to?" AI handling routine queries is fine, but you should be able to escalate to a human quickly when the AI's suggested options don't fit your situation.

Have a good look around you at what is being offered and how it is being used. If it is simply being used to cut staff and costs but provide no extra benefit to you, speak out. Monitoring systems should enable better care, not replace regular contact and efficiency tools should free up time for doctors and carers to spend on things that matter, not reduce the overall amount of human interaction.

It is always a good idea to ask what happens to data collected by AI monitoring systems. Who has access, how long it's stored, what safeguards exist to prevent misuse. These systems collect enormous amounts of information about your daily life and health, and you should know where that goes.

The honest assessment

You can't stop AI being introduced in these settings, but you can insist on access to real people when it matters, question decisions that reduce human contact in the name of efficiency, and be clear about which parts of care you're not willing to have handled by systems rather than people.
